What is Auracast?
Auracast is a new way to share sound using Bluetooth. It lets one device send audio to many other devices at the same time. This means you can listen to the same sound with friends, watch TV without extra wires, and even hear better in public places!
We talked about Auracast before in our blog, explaining how it can help people with hearing loss. Now, let’s learn about some key terms and how it works.
Key Terms
Transmitter: A transmitter is a device that sends sound. If you have a TV or computer, you can plug in an Auracast transmitter so that the sound goes to many people at once.
Receiver: A receiver is a device that gets sound. If you have a phone, a hearing aid, or special earbuds, they can act as receivers to pick up sound from an Auracast transmitter.
Range of Auracast vs. Regular Bluetooth: Auracast works at a longer distance (100 meters) than regular Bluetooth. Bluetooth usually works only a few feet away, but Auracast can reach across a big room, like in an airport or a stadium. A football field, including both end zones, is about 100 meters long! That’s the same distance that Auracast can sometimes reach, making it much better than regular Bluetooth.
How to Add Auracast to Your Devices
Some products don’t have Auracast built in, but you can retrofit them. This means you can add Auracast to older devices by plugging in a small adapter. These adapters work with:
- TVs
- Computers
- Smart tablets
- Phones
This is great because you don’t have to buy a brand-new device to enjoy Auracast! When you do want to buy something new, look for the new Bluetooth 5.2, Audio Sharing abilities.
Auracast & Hearing Aids
Some hearing aids already have Auracast, while others will get it with a software update soon. New technologies will come out that will have Auracast as well. We will try and keep you updated via this post.
