If you’ve recently purchased the Phonak Infinio or Infinio Sphere, you might have noticed the announcement of something new: Infinio Ultra and Infinio Sphere Ultra. It’s understandable if that made you wonder… did I just buy something that’s already outdated?
The good news is no, you didn’t. The new “Ultra” release is both a hardware upgrade and a software update, meaning many of the new features can be accessed by existing Infinio and Infinio Sphere users through a firmware update done at your hearing care providers clinic. In other words, Phonak isn’t leaving recent customers behind, but extending the same technology improvements to their existing users.
This marks a growing trend in hearing technology: software-driven updates that enhance performance without requiring entirely new hardware. Just like your smartphone or smartwatch, your hearing aids can now improve over time. Gaining smarter sound processing, better connectivity, and more refined automatic adjustments with each update.
So, what’s actually new?
While the Ultra models are almost identical to the Infinio on the outside, there’s some interesting changes happening inside. Both in how the devices process sound and how they connect to the world around you.
Smarter automatic adjustments
Phonak’s new AutoSense OS 7.0 uses a larger sound-scene database and a more advanced deep-neural-network (DNN) to automatically recognize and adapt to different listening environments.
In practical terms, that means the hearing aids can more accurately identify what kind of environment you’re in. It uses the data to determine if you are in a cafe, the car, a quiet room, etc. and automatically adjusts settings to try and give you the clearest possible speech while keeping background noise comfortable.
The algorithm behind this has been trained on a broader variety of real-world situations, so transitions between environments feel more natural and less “jumpy.” It’s all designed to reduce listening effort, ideally allowing for less fatigue and more focus during your day.
A cleaner, lower-maintenance design
Phonak also introduced a new EasyGuard wax protection system in the Ultra models. This is a subtle change but one that matters in everyday use: it helps prevent wax and moisture from affecting performance and cuts down on maintenance needs. For anyone who’s ever had a hearing aid suddenly go quiet due to a blocked receiver, this is a small but welcome upgrade.
Better battery efficiency
Inside, the Ultra series uses a more efficient processing chip. Phonak reports improved power management, translating to longer daily battery life. Especially for those who stream audio often. For rechargeable users, it means more listening hours between charges.
More reliable Bluetooth and streaming
Phonak also refined connectivity. The Ultra platform can remember up to eight devices and maintain two active connections at once. Therefore making switching from your phone to your tablet or TV is faster and smoother. Pairing has been simplified, too, reducing one of the biggest frustrations for many hearing-aid users.
Notably, however, Phonak is not upgrading into the new Bluetooth Auracast which they have mentioned in the past. We hope to see them add this forward thinking feature in the neat future.
Why this matters for current Infinio users
For anyone who recently invested in the Infinio or Infinio Sphere, this release isn’t bad news. The “Ultra” shows where hearing technology is headed: upgradable platforms that improve over time rather than devices that quickly become obsolete.
If your Infinio is eligible for the software update, you’ll gain the same smarter sound processing and connectivity improvements without needing new hearing aids.
