Oticon Zeal Review: Real-World Fitting Experiences from Our Clinic

What audiologists and patients actually think after three months of fittings — the very good, the good, and the not-so-good.

First impressions: design, build, and the charger

The Oticon Zeal has been available on the market for about three months, and we’ve already completed five fittings!  We have also done a number of demos to our patients. In this blog post, we want to share our experience so far.

When you first take the Zeal out of the box, it seems big. The Bluetooth loop is distinctive and looks like it could be a retention lock or even a remote mic, similar to how Resound positions their remote microphones on in-the-ear aids. The temptation to cut it is real– but don’t. Oticon actually includes a document in the box with a scissor image and a clear “don’t cut” warning. If it does get cut, it requires a repair, though the three-year warranty covers it at no cost.

The Bluetooth loop is a key design feature of the Oticon Zeal — cutting it will void function and require a warranty repair.

The charger tripped us up at first. It’s possible to place the aids in upside down without any indicator light activating, which looks exactly like a “dummy” unit. Even with 30 years of experience in the field and exposure to every kind of charger out there, I made this mistake. After a few tries, it becomes second nature.  The trick is to look for the lights when placing them in the charger. The light will activate.

Audiologist’s personal trial: sound quality and comfort

Before fitting any patients, we tried the Zeal ourselves. We connected to the software, selected a dome, and programmed them to a preferred setting. The sound quality was impressive!  We’d describe it as bolder than what we’re used to from Widex, which has a comparatively softer sound profile.

Music streaming was a standout. The Oticon Zeal produced very clear audio with a wonderful stereo image. For patients who frequently stream music from their phone, the Zeal is highly recommended.

Comfort was another story. Despite trying several dome sizes, we couldn’t achieve a comfortable fit for my ears. The right side tickled my ear canal, and the left side felt plugged. For patients who experience similar issues, custom molds made for the Zeal are the solution.

Patient fitting experiences with the Oticon Zeal

Case 1 –Steve: a textbook easy fitting

Steve had done his research, knew he wanted a streaming completely-In-the-ear hearing aid, and had never worn hearing aids before. He didn’t even want a demo. We fit him with an 8 mm two-vent dome, programmed using NAL-2 (which offers more gain than Oticon’s proprietary formula, which produces a comparatively flatter curve), and added two additional programs: one for hearing in noise and one for music. There was zero feedback, comfort was excellent, and setup in the Oticon telehealth app was straightforward. A genuinely smooth fitting experience.

Case 2 — Dan: fit adjustments and pricing flexibility

Dan had wanted an in-the-ear hearing aid that had Bluetooth connectivity for streaming for years and had previously settled for a receiver-in-canal style. He demoed the Zeal and liked the sound, but reported the Bluetooth cord kept popping out, and comfort wasn’t ideal because of that. Of course, in a demo, we don’t expect the perfect fit. We had fit him with an 8 mm two-vent dome. He also hesitated at the $4,800/pair price point.

Because we had other patients purchasing, we were able to negotiate better pricing from Oticon and offered the Zeal at $4,000 — a price he was more comfortable with. Keeping in mind, the more we order in bulk, like a warehouse, the better pricing we can get for you all.  To address the fit issue, we switched to a smaller dome, which allowed the aid to sit deeper in the ear canal. The Bluetooth lock then fit more securely, feedback was absent, and Dan reported loving both the sound quality and the streaming capability from such a small device. Another fully satisfied, happy patient!

When custom molds make the difference: Jim’s fitting

Jim came to us from a previous Oticon clinic. He was price-aware but committed to the Zeal. His fitting presented significant feedback challenges — the feedback management system, to put it diplomatically, behaved unpredictably. We ended up running on the softer Oticon proprietary program with closed domes. Power domes made him feel plugged. We ultimately disabled the feedback algorithm since there was no actual feedback occurring in the softer proprietary fitting, as running the algorithm was reducing gain unnecessarily.

The decision was made to pursue custom molds. Impressions were taken and sent to Oticon. Ten days later, the molds arrived. The difference was substantial: the feedback test with molds opened up significantly more room for prescribed gain, Jim reported excellent comfort, and real-ear verification revealed just how much additional output was now achievable compared to the pre-mold fitting. Jim is currently in a one-week real-world trial before final real-ear verification.

For patients with challenging ear anatomy or high gain needs, custom molds for the Oticon Zeal can transform the fitting outcome.

Demo feedback: sound quality vs. visual aesthetics

We’ve run several demos across different patients. One consistent theme among some female patients was concern about visibility — the black face plate and the Bluetooth link were considered too noticeable, even when they were satisfied with the hearing performance.

This raises a genuine question about vanity and perception. Do people around us really notice or scrutinize our ears closely enough to spot a hearing aid? Is the concern about visibility more about our own assumptions regarding how others perceive us? And would people actually judge someone for wearing a hearing aid? These are worth reflecting on when counseling patients who are hesitant for aesthetic reasons.
